Potato Head Folk : A Whimsical Portal To Art & Food

You can never miss this iconic four-storey building if you happen to walk along Keong Saik Road.
With its simple red lining against the white paint of the main building, it is no doubt why this is such a good spot to open up a cafe.
The building has this chinese name, "Dong Ya" which was previously the Tong Ah Eating House that serves traditional kaya toast and good kopi.
Although it's a pity that Tong Ah Eating House was being forced to move, the Potato Head Folk Group still managed to keep that signature signage which gives off a really unique vibe.
Why?
Because the concept is somewhat a fusion and I think it fitted well unto the whole theme.
Read on!
Three Buns is at the first level of al-fresco dining which charges no service charge.
Just be prepared to brave the heat if you are going in the afternoon!
I know many will be confused just as I were when I tried to figure out the name of this place.
Here is a breakdown of the four-storeys in the building, Potato Head Folk.
Level 1: Three Buns Bistro aka "The Kitchen".
Level 2 : Three Buns Restaurant aka "The Dining Room".
Level 3 : Studio 1939 Lounge aka "The Private Lounge".
Level 4 : Rooftop Garden aka "The Rooftop Bar".
Anyway, we weren't 'warriors' so we decided to head up to the 2nd level for some comfortable air-conditioning.
#firstworldproblems
And I must say, I really really love the interior of the restaurant!
It's so beautiful, every little corner has an artwork that decors the whole place up like magic.
It seemed that we have stepped into this portal designed by David Bromley (an Australian artist).
If anyone of you went to Artstage 2015 this year, you might have spotted some of his artworks as well!
I love eccentric, bold and colorful pieces of visual altogether.

Ha!
And here we are at level 2!
Interesting sight eh?
I totally fell in love with it.
This set of pillows subtly brought out the fusion theme that it is trying to put across.
And of course, the wooden furniture adds on to the mood.
I am telling you every corner is just too photo-worthy.
I couldn't resist all these snaps.
A peek back to reality.

TA-DAH, finally food is here!
House Fries ($5)
Very crispy and rich in content!
Dizzy Rascals ($15) for le foodie partner who didn't want a filled tummy so she chose a Kids' burger!
Guess the portion worked just fine for her!
The burger contains a 100g beef patty, cheese, onion relish, & double "Notorious T.O.M Sauce" in a demi brioche bun.
According to her, it was really really delicious!
And here is my Honky Tonk ($19), which I chose because I don't do beef and lamb.
A really flavorful burger which consists of the buttermilk fried chicken, coleslaw, lettuce, "Big Poppa Hot Sauce"& den miso mayo!
The burst of excitement in my mouth was unimaginable.
Got free stickers for her!
hahaha!
After we had our fill, we decided to follow the pretty tile flooring leading up...
Bunny!
I have no idea why but I love this painting here!
And more artworks along the journey~
I look like a hobbit standing in front of the giant door!
I guess this is the only door that leads you to the "The Private Lounge", Studio 1939.
Interesting eh?
And the final door to the rooftop!
The building holds a surprise center awaiting your arrival!
Even the bamboo blinds are nice.
Art vs Food, how would you rate this?
For me, it's a bonus!
I love to be surrounded by pretty things and of course, delicious food! ^^

Perhaps some Churros Waffles from Roosevelt's Diner & Bar?

If you are lazy to walk around Tanjong Pagar/Outram and you are trying to locate a meal spot, why not try Roosevelt's Diner & Bar?
(which is just at exit H, of the purple line, Outram Park station)
Roosevelt's is a modern diner that offers all-day dining with a variety of food choices!
And I love how these industrial chic furniture pieces are chosen.

Where you can spot : a series of lightbulbs used as a decorative statement piece...
"mismatched" yet cool combination of chairs...
a brick backwall at the counter area...
wall menu for tonight...
and several other art canvas that are being hung up on the respective walls!
An extensive spread of menu choices to choose from!

It looks like I am having this glorious spread all to myself (again), but no!
Latte ($4.80)
Truffle Fries ($11)
I thought the fries were average, nothing to shout about.
The portion was rather small for the amount paid.
But still, cravings were satisfied.
Egg Roosevelt ($17) consists of two poached eggs, chorizo, lemon garlic mayo (which pretty much is just mayo), and mashed potato.
I find this dish a tad too dry and the combination of ingredients didn't blend well much together.
The mayo didn't work good as a sauce with the eggs too.
I would prefer hollandaise sauce instead of mayo a thousand times.
Fortunately, the mashed potato tasted alright.
Initially, I was caught in between whether to get this or the Jalapeno Bacon & Truffle Mac & Cheese.
So I kinda did regret not ordering the Mac & Cheese. :o
Next up!
Dessert time!!!
Churros Waffles ($12) with cinnamon sugar, butter and mocha sauce!!!
Look at how the mocha sauce works on the waffles, and those are CHURROS waffles (to remind you again).
Le foodie partner getting ready to dig in the plate of goodness.
Fan of churros + waffles?
Come try it now!!!
Another cuppa from le partner's friend who happened to be working here at Roosevelt's.
.
Verdict : Maybe some Mac & Cheese upon next visit?!
.
With my crazyass makan partner of the day!
Signing off, folks!
Stay foodie!!! ^^

Grin Affair : Keep Smiling With The Cakes In A Jar!

I am sure everyone grins when it comes to desserts, and even if you are full, there will always be another tummy just for that.
Am I right?
With more cafes clustered around Outram/Tanjong Pagar area, it is not tough to find yet another sweet spot for all.
Grin Affair is one of the few that I have heard about years ago and is still successful up till now.
And there may be an upcoming outlet in Bishan area this year (which is nearer to me!), with a completely new menu!
Do check on their the official/facebook page for more updates! ^^
If all else fails, contact them via phone!
And here we are!
It looks like the cafe is having a little tea party!
Please be gentle.
Welcoming you with colours that are pleasing to the eye.
I was quite surprised at the layout of the cafe because I thought they only provided take-away ( which was not the case!).
There is ample space available for around 20-30 pax.
And I simply love the unpretentious interior.
It is very cosy and will be just the right place for you to chill out with your friends after a meal.
Cute little descriptive notes to help you understand what flavours they offer!
I had a hard time choosing one because everything looked just as yummy.
There is a total of thirteen flavour to choose from!
Or else, you can opt for the delivery : http://order.grinaffair.com/ where there are special editions for Valrhona Chocolate lovers out there!
Brought these cute darlings home in a full grin!
Tadahhhh~
In the end, I made up my mind on Banoffee ($6) & Cookies & Cream ($6)!
Cookies & Cream is self explanatory and so, what is Banoffee?
It consists of banana slices with coffee cake on baked crust, dulce de leche & pecans.
And this is also the only one that has coffee element in it, which is just nice for le mister.
Dulce de leche is a Spanish term that means candy of milk or milk jelly which is a combination of milk and sugar that will be cooked until the sugar caramelizes, producing a thick, creamy and intensely flavored spread.
via wikihow & chow.com
Look at the pretty packaging!
Can I just emphasize on how ingenious the idea of having a cake in such a container?!
And it's really hassle-free if you wish to bring it around.
You need not worry about how the cake will turn out not looking like one after surviving through the crowd here in Singapore.
And my verdict after tasting them?
101 % Awesomeness!
The price paid is also reasonable for the portion given.
I really wouldn't mind traveling back just to try out the rest of the flavours!
Oh! And last but not least, you can recycle the jars by returning them.
For every jar returned, you will be given a sticker.
When you reach a number of stickers, you will be entitled to one free treat!
Hee, tea party just ended!
Thanks for reading, folks!
